Traditionally he honored as god of study and learning. Full moon shines softly through the evenings mist, lighting Michizane's sorrow. Michizane was a prominent scholar and political figure in Heian period Japan. He was born in aristocratic family and become well educated scholar, and a professor of literature at the university in Heian and finally acquiring the post of Minister of the Right, with junior second rank. Through out intrigues of his enemies at Imperial court, Michizane was exiled and ended his days two years later. Little is known of Japanese painter Hosai except that he was a Tokyo painter specializing in historical subjects, who studied with the popular Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-92), one of the last of the great printmakers. Yoshitoshi himself worked in a mixture of ukiyo-e and Yamato-e and his work reflects an increasing Western influence with historical and heroic subjects. In these respects it would appear that Hosai followed the master. Scroll is in good condition overall, but some small stain in upper part.
